Who is teaching you

I am Roberta Maldonado. I have been a teacher since I was ten years old, when I taught my four-year-old brother to read because he was hiding behind the door at preschool rather than go in.

At nineteen I moved to London. I read Languages at the University of London, took my CELTA, specialised at the Montessori Centre International, and completed a Master's in TESOL.

Then I taught in Brazil and in Spain — four schools in one day, everything I owned in a wheeled bag, ten-hour days, a voice that was giving out and a rash no doctor could explain.

With every one of those qualifications finished, I stood in a classroom and decided the problem must be me. It was not. It was a model that put content at the bottom and the child at the top, and then blamed the teacher when it did not work.

So I built my own. I combined Montessori, Total Physical Response and Positive Discipline into a single method for three-to-six year olds — BETA for Very Young Learners. The following term the children loved the sessions, parents started recommending me by name, and the school gave me permission to drop their materials entirely.

Then the pandemic closed the schools. English teachers lost their jobs. My Very Young Learner groups moved online — and gained students.
